There was a time when companies hired newbies and 30 or 40 years later retired loyal, trusted members of the “family.” Ford, General Electric, or any number of major enterprises produced excellent products because they employed excellent workers, from the cleaning crews on the factory floors to the executives at the top of the high rise. Employees from Ford would argue with those from Chrysler over “their company.” Those days are gone.
Loyalty, from top to bottom and back up, is nearly non-existent. CEOs come and go… usually with a huge payout… and sometimes at the expense of the workers who sweat for the success.
And why? Leadership! Or more precisely… lack of leadership! It doesn’t seem to be taught or learned – or practiced. The irony is the exorbitant cost of no leadership to a fledgling or established business.
