What is psychotherapy? How is it different from psychiatry?|

Psychotherapy is “talk therapy.” You meet with a therapist and explore issues of concern and learn new skills to cope.

Psychiatry is practiced by a licensed physician and typically involves an evaluation to determine whether medication is warranted in addressing the issue at hand. Psychiatrists rarely engage in counseling these days.

Referrals for a psychiatric evaluation (medication) are made when necessary.

What can I expect in the first session?

Our first session together will last for 90 minutes. This gives us time to get to know one another, begin to develop an understanding of what’s going on, and begin considering a plan of action that will help you reach your goals. We will also go over forms that I will have sent you in advance and examine your previous history.

What about follow-up sessions?

The second and subsequent sessions will last for 50 minutes. Beginning with the second session, we will create a treatment plan that will guide our time together going forward.

What are your office hours?

Monday thru Thursday 8 am – 8 pm
Friday 9 am – 1 pm

Does therapy have to be intense?

Sometimes. Therapy can be a difficult process at times, as we get a little deeper into you. Some sessions may be more difficult than others. We will move at your pace. This is your process. I see you as the “author” of your life story and myself as your “co-author.” I will help you pilot as your navigator. It will be worth the journey, and you will never be alone in the process.

How long will I be in therapy?

Truthful answer: It all depends… on what you’re dealing with, what kind of change you want to see for yourself, and what – if any – time constraints you might have. This is something we can explore together in your sessions.

How long before I get better?

The healing process is different for everyone. It is important to know that healing certain wounds can take time and can often be especially painful in the beginning of the process. Some people start feeling better after their first session. For others, it may take some time. In our sessions, I will be able to help you further understand what your particular healing process might entail and how I can support you through your process.
